The MacDowell Club of Milwaukee is proud to announce the 2015 Scholarship Winners. Eleven students from the Milwaukee area auditioned for awards on Saturday, March 18, 2015. Impressive musicianship was shown by all participants.

Emily Cooley of Mequon for her composition "A Circle Transparent Above Us."

2013 Scholarship Awards

Lydia Rose Eiche First Place $1,000

Lydia Rose Gionfriddo Eiche - From Muskego, Lydia is a Junior studying with Mimmi Fulmer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she has appeared as Zerlina in its University Opera production of Don Giovanni and will sing the role of Dalinda in its production of Handel's Ariodante this fall. She has appeared as a soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and holds several other awards including the John David Anello, Sr. & Albert A. Silverman Memorial Scholarship from the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee; the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS); plus a Tuition Waiver from UW-Madison. In June, she will sing the role of Susanna in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Opera Orvieto in Italy.

Naiza Delica Second Place $750

Naiza Delica - Soprano Naiza Delica, a resident of Shorewood. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and student of Tanya Kruse-Ruck, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance. Miss Delica appeared in several UW-M opera theatre productions and has been a featured soloist with several local choirs. Recently, she has served as Music Director for shows in several elementary and middle schools and currently works as a freelance accompanist and private teacher of piano, voice and violin between Milwaukee and Fond du Lac.

Dana Vetter Third Place $500

Dana Vetter - Sussex soprano Dana Vetter, a 2011 graduate of the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. Since earning her degree in Vocal Performance, she is continuing her studies with her long-time voice teacher, Maria Hansen, back in her hometown of Hartland. This summer, Miss Vetter will attend the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.

2012 Young Composer Competition

Christopher J. DarniederFirst Place $1,200

Milwaukee composer Christopher J. Darnieder, 23, for his woodwind quintet, Introduction and Tarantella. In addition, the piece will be given its world premiere on one of the MacDowell Club's concerts next season.

Emily CooleySecond Place $1,000

Emily Cooley of Mequon, Wisconsin, 22, for her Variations on a Theme from "Wit" scored for violin, cello and piano.

Shuying LiThird Place $600

Shuying Li, 23, a native of China currently studying in the United States, whose entry for violin, cello, piano and percussion is entitled Prejudice and Pride.

Information about these winners Winners were announced December 25, 2012. Seventeen Wisconsin composers, 25 years or younger, submitted entries for our 2012 Young Composers Chamber Music Competition, supported in part by a generous grant from the Argosy Foundation. They were reviewed by MacDowell Club members Michael Batcho, Wallace Cheatham, and Sr. Marion Verhaalen. Those they deemed worthy to progress were turned over to James Crowley, Eun-Joo Kwak, Monte Perkins, and Roger Ruggeri.

Christopher recently conducted his composition The Quintet - Introduction and Variations which was performed with the quintet members: Robert Estlund, flute; Judy Smeiska, oboe; Mike Keegan, French horn; Andrew Jackson, bassoon; and Gail Hodkiewicz, clarinet.
